A fashion expert at Birmingham City University has claimed that The Clothes Show Live has become a shopping experience for young girls, instead of being an event to share fashion trends to the public.

The Clothes Show Live is a fashion, beauty and music event which is annually held in December at the Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

Alison Rapsey, a fashion lecturer at Birmingham City University said: “The focus today with the Clothes Show is more about the shopping and bargains to bag, not so much about the style tips.”

Alison explains: “The Clothes Show gives access to young people interested in fashion a range of brands and retailers, helping expand their knowledge. The show is more fun and exciting than informative.”

Fashion gurus would attend the Clothes Show in the late 1900’s to find out what the future fashion trends would be.

There was no facility to log on to Twitter and check what the Kardashians are wearing as we can do today, so we now have different fashion platforms.

When looking at the role of social media on today’s generation, Alison says: “Social media will play a huge part in young fashionistas.”

We have the ability to see what is ‘in fashion’ from the comfort of our own phone, instead of having to attend an event to find out this information.

Kate Farley, who is also a fashion teacher at Birmingham City University commented: “More immediate forums such as social media are keeping fashion companies on their toes.”

Due to the change of technology over time, we can now question what the true purpose of the Clothes Show is.

Fashion student, Amani Hearts, agrees that the Clothes Show may not be as relevant in today’s society: “I think it has changed its purpose as to me, it’s not the latest trends, the fashion at the show is not on the market, it’s more about promoting fashion retailers that may be smaller than anything else.”

The Clothes Show Live are hosting their last event in Birmingham this year from the 2nd of December to the 6th. Tickets are available from £26.65![endif]--![endif]--
