Hear before you see

On the 24th of November, a unique event is being hosted by a group of Birmingham students for music lovers over the city.

‘Tunnel Vision’ is a live music event which aims to challenge people’s expectations of musicians and live performances.

The group plan on doing this by restricting the audience from physically seeing the performers whilst they sing.

“When you see a live band you associate certain images with their music, so we want to question the stereotypes surrounding emerging musicians today,” explains student Niall Creane, who is part of the Tunnel Vision team.

The event will take place in a darkened space, such as a tunnel, for the audience to walk through.

This dark space will lead them to the stage where the artist is performing, so that they have heard the performer for a few moments without physically seeing them.

Niall Creane explains: “We live in a time where we hear music online on facilities such as Spotify before you see the artist, so we wanted to play around that and put on an event with an element of mystery and fun to it.

“We’re treating it like a bit of a social experiment too.”

It is the first event that the students have created, as Niall Creane said: “The idea sprung from a lecture as we had to generate ideas for a new and innovative live event, and out of several different ideas we put forward, this was the one we were most excited about.”

However, the students do have a history with the music industry themselves, as Creane reveals: “We are all musicians with a wealth of performing live experience, so we know the ins and outs of what goes on in planning an event like this.

“We are having a lot of fun with the planning of it.”

Samantha Murphy, who manages a local band in Birmingham called ‘The Projects’ said: “I definitely think this idea is good. A lot of the time the audience will judge you on how you look, carry yourself on stage, and even how you introduce yourself. This will definitely be an interesting experiment.”

Currently, the students are still in the proposal stages of the event and are busy planning it to ensure it runs smoothly.
