Local artists were given the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents at an ‘Urban Music Open Mic Night.’

Visionary Music Production hosted their open mic event at Birmingham’s Rjjz Café on the 10thof April 2018.

VMP are an upcoming events and public relations brand formed by students looking to help local artists gain publicity.

This was a great opportunity for artists around the Midland’s to showcase their talent by performing to a live audience, as well as headline acts coming from London to perform.

Artists such as Lady MJ Warrior, Styles and P, and Blenders performed on the night, along with headline act ‘Big Jest’ coming to showcase new exclusive music.

Lady MJ Warrior, who performed at the 'Urban Music Open Mic Night'

Lady MJ Warrior, a Birmingham based rapper said: “I decided to perform today because I feel it’s for a special cause, as an advocate for invisible disabilities, there is a connection here due to the various different conditions there are in the world, so this helps to raise awareness of these issues which lay close to my heart.

“I’ve been doing music since my first breath, I was born to be a singer and I enjoy all types of music.

“I think as artists its vital for young people to have this platform, it invites people together which is so important and produces emotion. The night was put out by students as well as being for an amazing cause so we must support that.”

Organiser and member of VMP Roshna Aboullahi said: “I think the event went really well in terms of numbers as we didn’t have a lo

t of ties to promote it. However, as an event organiser, I think it was difficult to manage everything that was going on.”

With the DJ pulling out last minute, this caused high pressure for VMP’s first event to be a success.

“This meant we had to allow the sound engineer to take over. We had to improvise with this which was difficult because of the order and timing of the acts which had to then be re-arranged spontaneously.”

The night celebrated urban talent across the city and beyond, which Asiah Abdoullahi, member of VMP said: “People networked with each other over talent and supported one another, it’s a good way to get talented people together.”

In aid of Cancer Research UK, the event had a “larger turnout than expected with 70 people coming to support the event which raised £256 from ticket sells and donations for a great cause” said Zoe Smith, organiser of the event.

Mohammed Omar who attended the event said: “The vibe was great, the artists were talented and it’s good that students are allowing other young people to prosper and showcase their talent.”
